Carter Clarke Osterbind, III
The reason I make drawings and paintings is to see if I can achieve pictorial unity with each work. If I can do that, I feel that the image made is successful.
In 1999 I began using repetition in my works in order to have variations of the object(s) in each image. The repeated objects are placed against a ground. The relationship between the objects and between the objects and the ground creates an interplay of spatial expectations and juxtapositions.
The parts of a work used for repetition have been objects in landscape, interiors, and still life. The grounds have been landscape surfaces and spaces, interior floors, walls, table tops, and patterned or decorated cloths.
There is no motivation for my work other than to attempt to make a visual coming together that creates unity in a drawing or painting.
